My Place

Sannegårdshamnen is my favourite place in Gothenburg. It is a little port for small boats. I wrote a poem about this place many years ago, for school, sadly I can not find it. Also, Gothenburg Daily Photo, even though recently started, will need to take a shorter break. But we will be back in September again.

Gothenburg Sunset

Ontop on Snålberget one has great view over Ullevi-stadium. Last week when U2 had their concert lots of people sat here watching the show and listening to great music. Today and tomorrow people will come here to watch Madonna but the sunset is good enough for me.

Enjoying

When I was entertaining myself photographing everything that caught my attention, a lady on a bike showed up. It was still early morning but she parked the biked, sat down on the quay and picked up a book. Everytime I passed, she was sitting there, enjoying the sound of the water and her book. It looked so nice, this is how I would like to turn out when in her age.

Temple of the Winds

This monument, called Vindarnas Tempel (the Temple of the Winds) is placed on Hisingen, close to Sannegårdshamnen. I have never given it much thought before but now, somehow it made an ingenious impression. It fits there and has a spirit.

Stora Teatern

On a sunny day, youth will sit on the grass by the channel; have an ice-cream, sip on a beer or just chitchat. This is a common view in the summertime. The grand, white building in the background, the Big Theatre (or Stora Teatern) was inaugurated in 1859. When building the magnificent theatre the costs were exceeded with almost 400 percentages! Somebody surely miscalculated. Stora Teatern is protected by law, to keep and maintain its cultural and historical value.

Poseidon

Poseidon is the Greek, mythological god of the sea. No wonder that this statue was raised in this town. As mentioned before, Poseidon has become a symbol of Gothenburg and it attracts many turists and their cameras. The statue, which appears as a fontain at summers as well, was created by Charles Milles and has been standing on Götaplatsen since 1931.

Götaplatsen

Götaplatsen, is a sqaure at the end of Gothenburg’s main street, Kungsportsavenyn. It was inaugurated in 1923, when Gothenburg celebrated its 300th anniversary. In the backround one can see Gothenburg Museeum of Art and the statue that is a well-known symbol of Gothenburg.

Details

An old flagpole reveals that shipping played an important role in Gothenburg through the years. I can not imagine I have passed this place so many times not even noticing all the details on the flagpoles, each with a different motive.

Stora hamnkanlen at night time

When Gothenburg was founding it was important that the town would function well as a port. That is why Gustav II Adolf hired men from the Netherlands, who had great experience, to help the digging the cannels. Except from the moat the work resulted in Stora Hamnkanalen, a part of it is depicted on this photo. I should also add that the dutch gave Gothenburg the nickname New Amsterdam which was used for many years.
